A GROUP from Gulf is threatening people manning the Laloki betel nuts checkpoint with black magic.

They said the threat followed the constant harassment, theft and insulting behaviour of the National Capital District Commission city rangers.

Claiming to speak on behalf of the aggrieved villagers, Willie Jarra, 48, from Karami Village, Malalaua district, Gulf, claimed they were robbed by city rangers on Wednesday night when travelling into Port Moresby from Kerema. He said it was around 7.30pm when they arrived at the checkpoint in a PMV.

He said the city rangers swore at them and the passengers and ordered them off the vehicle. He said there were 23 passengers and most of them had no betel nuts or mustard but the rangers went ahead and checked them.

“We came in a PMV and it was easy for them to see us but instead they forcefully checked us and stole from us,” Jarra said.

He said a city ranger ripped open the zipper of his bag and put his hand into the bag thinking that he had betel nuts.

“The city ranger checked my bag and took K2,500 plus my mobile phone,” he said. “The city rangers are continuously harassing us and we are sick and tired. I will use puripuri (sorcery) to punish those who are responsible for the loss of my K2,500,” Jarra said.
