Gumine youths surrender marijuana to police

OVER 50 youths from Kaleku village in Gumine district, Chimbu, surrendered 2761 marijuana plants to the police on Monday.
Chimbu provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli said the youths gave up cultivating and consuming marijuana and surrendered to Gumine and Chimbu police special operation ‘weeding grass’ team.
He thanked the youths for cooperating with police and encouraged them to live positively.
“There are many good means and ways for you to find success in life, marijuana, homebrew and other negative things will only spoil your lives,” he said.
Supt Beli also commended Gumine police under the leadership of commander Sgt Alois Dame and members of operation ‘weeding grass’ led by Detective Yatefa Welis.
“I praise you for tremendous efforts in getting the youths to surrender over 2760 marijuana plants which is a big number; this has the potential to destroy lives of youths and spoil future generations,” Beli said.
Youth spokesman Paul Paulus said the special operation was involved in getting rid of marijuana and homebrew all over the province and Gumine youths involved in these illegal activities would like to voluntarily surrender.
He said they knew implication of these illegal activities and what it meant if they were caught so they surrendered to police.
Paulus said marijuana dealings for many years have been curse and destroyed the lives of individuals, families and whole tribes involve in its trade.
Councillor Aiwa Luke said it was one of his goals as a mandated leader to see communities change from marijuana and home brewing activities and it is good to see more than 50 youths surrender to police.
Rural police station commander Sgt Dame is appealing to all wards in the Gumine district to surrender their marijuana and brewing apparatus to see a safer community.
