RABAUL Gurias pair Walter Benjamin and Nelson Aufi say they are eager to make the most of their rookie season in the country’s premier rugby league competition, the Digicel Cup.
Despite Saturday’s 22-29 home loss to reigning runners-up Waghi Tumbe, they told The National that it had always been their goal to play in the inter-city competition.
“It’s a great feeling for me to play at this level,” said Benjamin, who is from the northern coast of East New Britain.
“I didn’t do my best on debut.
“But I am grateful that the Gurias gave me an opportunity to play.
“Although we lost, I am keeping my head up as I look to improve my skills and eliminate errors from my game.
“I am looking forward to my next game.
“Hopefully, I can do much better moving forward.”
The Agmark-sponsored Gurias recruited the 22-year-old from Talili Warriors in the Rabaul competition this year.
Meanwhile, Kokopo Technical Secondary School teacher Aufi said he was lost for words about his semi-professional debut.
“It was always a dream for me to play at this level especially with the Gurias,” he said.
“I really enjoyed the game despite the loss.
