ABOUT 500 people – women, men and children – turned out yesterday in the small township of Gusap in the Ramu Valley of Madang to support the national haus krai campaign.

The day was hosted by the Soroptimist International Ramu and other stakeholders within the community, which included students of the St Luke’s Primary School and the Ramu International Primary School students and teachers.

Support also came from Ramu Agri Industries Ltd (RAIL) where general manager Jamie Graham spoke of the policies in place that protected all female employees, women in the communities and wives of men who were employed by RAIL against all forms of violence.

“In PNG, the culture of violence is accepted in many parts of the country where women are always blamed and become victims without reason,” Graham said.

He said RAIL did not tolerate any forms of violence against women and saw the haus krai as an important event to speak up and put a stop to violence against women.

The day saw speeches from various people within the company and community who all had one message:

“All forms of violence against women and girls must stop”.

With everyone showing their support and dressed in black as a sign of mourning, strong messages were spoken to all who came to witness the event.
