A LOCALLY owned construction company in Lae, Morobe is backing Morobe Hammerhead Sharks for the upcoming Black Orchids 7s tournament in Buka, Autonmous Region of Bougainville.
FTM Construction yesterday came to the rescue of the Morobe Rugby Union provincial side.
Jonny Rosso Junior, on behalf of the firm, handed over a cheque of K15,000 to the MRU president Avea Hiarua for the team’s travel to the tournament in Buka.
Rosso Jr said the firm had assisted local games in ward three and surrounding areas of the Lae urban local level government.
He said it was the first time for his firm to assist the provincial rugby union side. “It’s a difficult time for everyone but as a locally-owned company operating in the province, we are trying to do whatever we can to assist the local teams and communities.
Rosso Jr said the firm was looking at supporting the association in future depending on an economic turnaround.
He wished the team good luck and encouraged the players to do well at the tournament in Buka.
Hiarua, when receiving the cheque, said he was very grateful to FTM for coming its support.
He said that the firm would have the naming rights to the provincial sevens team at the Black Orchids 7s in Buka.
“We are thankful to the local contractor for bailing us out of this situation.
“The provincial side will be known as FTM Hammerhead Sharks at the tournament that will run from the  July 2-3,” Hiarua said.
He said preparations for the team were good, with the core of players that won the national sevens championships retained.
Former Pukpuks player Aiem Pilakos is the team coach.
Hiarua said that this would be the first time for the provincial side to participate in the tournament, unlike before, where clubs in the association were taking part.
He said the team was expected to do well at the tournament.
