Haoda: Create two electorates in Kairuku-Hiri

CENTRAL province Governor Kila Haoda has called on the Government to reconsider the land boundaries for Kairuku-Hiri and create two electorates.
Haoda told Parliament on Friday that Kairuku-Hiri was one of the biggest electorates in Central, with about 121,000 people.
“When we talk about equal distribution to our people, we must have equal distribution to our people,” he said.
“Kairuku-Hiri has large land and I urge you members of parliament that in 2017 this electorate must be made into two and by 2022 there should be two electorates.”
There have been several requests to break up the Kairuku-Hiri district into two.
Haoda also raised concerns about the issue of land-grabbing and settlements in the city which were spilling onto Central.
“This is a big issue, we must find the land and negotiate with my people before settling them, it takes too long and my people are pushed to the limits,” he said.
“We must have plans where we will put these people before we evict them and they have nowhere to go except to Central province to illegally occupy my people’s land.
“Getting land by force, buying land off the people, which is already state land, that is another problem for the minister for Lands and this is a big issue.
“When we make roads to this capital, we must consider researching not only economic but social effects of the road.”
