Have both men, women candidates

Letters

I SAW this headline in The National in its Nov 12 issue, “Party official says electing women to Parliament unlikely” (Pg6) and it saddened my heart.
I feel sorry for my sisters, especially if one of them decides to contest the national election.
This statement made by this party official is the most degrading to our own sisters around the country who are exercising their democratic rights.
My opinion is this, I believe we should let all political parties make it their business to endorse women candidates alongside their male folk and campaign for both on same stage.
Because after the winning candidate is declared, and the party’s numbers to form the new Government is the same.
Benefits and penalties are all the same.
Gender equality in elections must be corrected and amended to give all political parties rights to endorse two officials’ candidates, one male and one female plus any pro-party candidates.
That will give equal opportunity for women to win the election and be the leader of the people.
So, we can have more women in our Parliament.
