SLEEPING giants Bishop Brothers Hawks have soared over SBS Butterflies defeating them 24-16 in the Port Moresby rugby league premier competition to secure the second spot on the ladder.
A gutsy performance by seasoned campaigners Edea Morea, Toua Kohu and former Wari Vele Raiders utility Jarred Haoda lifted the spirits of their teammates to dash home for a victory in the last 10 minutes of play.
The final score-line did not reflect the battle out on the field as both sides even in all facets as the game went right down to the wire but the boys from Hanuabada held on to shrug off a more determined Butterflies side.
Pintsized halfback Morea opened the scorebook with a classic try 15 minutes into the game which was converted to take an early 6-0 lead.
The try was short-lived when Butterflies U19 second rower Charles Kaipel, who is making his debut in the premier division, unearth one of class act to cross over seven minutes later
Kaipel with halfback Diksy Ani, from the U19 division, showed that they can match against their senior opponents in the Hawks side, filling in for Benjamin John, Aaron Mulunga and Johnson Kuike.
Kaipel crossed over again in the second stanza to ensure they grabbed the two competition points.
But his courageous efforts were not enough as Hawks rallied in the last 15 minutes to see bulldozing prop Igua Heni, Vincent Doura and Toramo Dairi all scoring to lend the knockout punch for Hawks to surge out victors.
