THE headless body of a man was found on the banks of the Zokizoi River in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, on Monday morning, bringing to three the number of killings reported during the weekend.
A man who had gone to the river to bath discovered the body without the head and immediately alerted authorities who took the remains to the Goroka Base Hospital morgue.
According to police, the corpse belonged to a young man from the Dom area of Sinasina-Yongomugl district, Chimbu.
Last Friday night, another young man from the Dom area was stabbed to death in Goroka and in retaliation, the relatives converged onto the popular Kakaruk market in Goroka, kidnapped a man, also from Dom, and took him to Notofana where he was tortured for more than three hours before he died from the injuries sustained.
Goroka police connected the beheading to the same spate of killings from last Friday.
Police said the situation within the Dom community was tense as parents stopped their children from going to school in fear of more payback killings.
Parents of students from the Dom area attending schools in the Eastern Highlands have withdrawn their children in fear of more retaliation.
Eastern Highlands police commander Supt Augustine Wampe could not be contacted for comment, however, his men who were at the crime scenes described all the killings as barbaric and inhumane.
