Health Department confirms at least 43 deaths from measles

THE Health Department has confirmed that at least 43 people have died so far from measles.

But Berry Ropar, the programme manager in the surveillance and emergency response division, said it could be more.

The National Capital District has reported 16 deaths, Enga reported 12 and Hela 15.

“We expect the death toll to be in hundreds or more,” Ropar said.

However, he said they could not give exact figures.

“We will be in a better position to give figures only after the outbreak and when we get reports from the different provinces.”

The department is stepping up its immunisation programme to address the measles outbreak.

Provinces have also been told to provide early and effective treatment according to the standard treatment protocol to those who require treatment for pneumonia and dysentery.

“All affected provinces are responding to the outbreak and continue providing vaccination to the target population,” he said.

“Vaccines have been supplied by the department. 

“We have enough supply in the country to cater for the need.

“Children are admitted for treatment and treated accordingly. 

“Most (measles) patients are screened and treated at outpatients at all health facilities.”

The department confirmed 1,965 cases out from the 3,996 specimens received and tested in the laboratory.

But figures for clinical suspected cases were not immediately available because the department is yet to receive the figures from the provinces.
