HEALTH service is a basic human right and people must look after their medical facilities, according to the International Committeeof theRed Cross.

Head of operations forAsia-Pacific Boris Michel said that during his visit to Southern Highlands.

Michel visited the people of Kalolo in the Kagua-Erave district last Monday on a fact-finding mission regarding its operations in the country.

He inspected the building of a new health centre funded by the organisation and urged people to look after the health services.

Kalolo is the site of a health facility built in 2015 with support from the Red Cross. It serves around 20,000 people.

“I heard aboutthe people using their bare hands and sticks and shovels to clear this large area of land to build this facility,” he said.

“This shows the people’s commitment to the project and their desire to have health services in their area.”

Michel said from reports he received, out of 24 health post in Kagua-Erave, 17 had suspended operations.

He said the new facility included three staff houses and toilet facilities.

“I am impressed with the support from the community like providing land, carpenters, and providing security to the facilities,” he said.

Michel said the centre would operate anytime this year, as soon as all work done and staff recruit to work in the new centre.
