HEALTH workers in Chimbu are conducting awareness programmes on the Coronavirus (Covid-19) so that people visiting urban centres do not take the virus back to their villages.
Officer in charge of the Bomai sub-health centre in Karamui Jessy Simon told The National that it would be a disaster to have a Covid-19 outbreak in remote areas where health facilities were scarce.
“So far, no case has been reported here,” he said.
“We are far from the towns and cities and the Covid-19 cannot reach us.
“There is minimum contact with the outside world.
“But our concern is about people making trips to town on foot for marketing and getting supplies. If one of them contracts Covid-19, he or she will bring it back to the people.
“In the awareness programmes, we emphasise that when people go to town, they have to wear a mask, wash their hands regularly and maintain physical distancing.
“When they return home, we encourage them to (isolate) for at least a week.”
