 COMMUNITY health workers (CHW) are undergoing training at the St Andrew’s Rural Community College at Sapandai in Wosera-Gawi district, East Sepik.

College manageress Emilyn Kopania said the 84 students, who began training, came from the Highlands, Islands and Momase regions.

Kopania said the students had gone through the introductory courses.

The introduction part goes with the first five foundation modules which includes topics such as:

l Orientation to my role as a CHW;

l Work place communication;

l Working as a member of the health team;

l Controlling diseases; and

l Basic anatomy and physiology.

Kopania said life-skill training was also included in the course.

“Plans to take the CHW students to visit the health centres in the district is well underway as they will go there only for observation purposes,” she said.

The CWH training school has two full-time lectures while guest lectures and tutors teach there too.

After completing the first five foundation modules, the students will evaluate how far they have come.

They are to look into the second part of the course which includes anatomy and physiology, child health care, hygiene and nutrition, and students’ medical assistance.
