Oil Search has chipped in K10,000  for the Operation Open Heart Programme which begins in Port Moresby this weekend.
The programme is made possible by volunteers comprising cardiac specialists, hearts surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses who travel to PNG from Australia and Singapore to perform open heart surgery mainly on children and young adults.
Since 1993, the programme hadchanged the lives of more than 1000 Papua New Guineans and benefited local doctors and nurses who had worked with the specialists.
Gerea Aopi, Oil Search executive general manager for stakeholder engagement, said the firm was more than pleased to support the programme that had benefited “many of our people who otherwise would not be able to undertake the operation overseas”.
“Oil Search began supporting Operation Open Heart in 2002 and it is very encouraging to hear that through this programme, we have our first ever PNG cardiac specialist team who are already performing heart surgery and are on the path to performing open-heart surgery on  infants and young adults,” he said.
The programme  will be held from Aug 5 to 13  at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
