THE week-long Operation Open Heart programme has gone according to plan with 50 patients given a second chance in life after undergoing life-saving surgery.

Prof Nakapi Tefuarani who heads the programme said there were still some more cases to deal with and commended the visiting team and locals for their outstanding and tireless work.

“I cannot thank enough the visiting doctors, nurses, technicians and the rest of the medical team that have graced the Port Moresby General hospital this week to carry out the Operation Open Heart programme.

“Our own local doctors and nurses are working closely with their counterparts and learning the procedures at the same time,” he said.

Tefuarani said the OOH programme was scheduled to end today.

He thanked all the corporate sponsors and individuals who contributed in cash and kind towards the programme.

Nurse unit manager for the operation theater, Eunice Laim, was overwhelmed when she recalled the work they did in the theater.

“Having been with this team for the last 17 years, it has been a whole new experience every year.”
