Hearts edge Saints to win title

VUNAPOPE Sacred Hearts won the East New Britain AFL title after beating Vunabosco Saints 102-94 in a strongly contested match at the Kalabond field on Saturday.
The Hearts, led by captain Derryl Chumote, showed their class by kicking 15 goals and six behinds to the Saints 14 goals and 10 behinds.
In the first quarter, the Hearts wasted no time getting on the fornt foot kicking five goals and a behind for 31 points while the Saints managed two goals and four behind for 16 points.
In the second quarter, the game was tighter with the Hearts banking five goals and two behinds which brought their progressive total to 63.
The Saints slotted four goals and three behinds (43) to keep the margin to 20points 43.
In the third quarter the Hearts scored three goals and a behind and the Saints rattled off three goals.
The Hearts led by a margin of 10 points (82-72) at three-quarter time.
The final term was tense both sides desperate to get the ball to the other end.
In the end the Hearts got on top scoring two goals and two behinds while the Saints kicked four goals and a behind in a brave comeback.
The Hearts received the winner’s trophy and the Saints received the runners-up trophy.
The man of the match award went to Hearts Randol Pakorei and the best and fairest player of the competition went to Val Kuyan.
