Erap-Boana Road in Nawaeb district of Morobe is being damaged by heavy rain.
The road, which was built during the colonial administration, services Lutheran Church’s Boana district headquarter and also Nawaeb district administration headquarters.
District chief executive James Neapukali said that since Jan 1, flooding from heavy and continual rain had damaged many sections of the roads.
“The rain has been ongoing for days. This has affected the normal routine of the PMVs, which are transporting farmers and their garden produce to Lae Main Market,” he said.
“It has affected the peoples’ daily income-earning opportunity.”
Neapukali said a backhoe from National Department of Works was fixing the road.
“The scope of the road was done by the district development authority,” he said.
“We bought fuel for the backhoe, we are paying the operator’s allowance, and we are fortunate that the machines are here to fix the road.
“Though the road was bad, the backhoe including an excavator, is still on the ground fixing the road and making sure the PMVs travel.”
