Hekari beat Mt Hagen

HEKARI United advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s National Soccer League after they shut out Mt Hagen 6-0 in last weekend’s quarterfinal in Port Moresby.
Golden boot winner Calista Maneo netted all six goals to thrash the visitors.
Hekari coach Eric Komeng said the team deserved the win for their consistency all season.
“They’ve been working very hard since the start of the season,” he said. “Their hard work continues to pay off.”
Komeng said it was a challenge for his players to face a team from outside the Southern Conference.
“Mt Hagen are a good side, but my players stuck to the game plan and got the job done,” he said.
After a premature end to the 2021 season, Komeng said they were focused on reaching the grand final.
“I think the cancellation also helped us to prepare well for this season,” he said. “We started the season on a high note, and this showed how determined we were.”
Despite the loss, Mt Hagen coach Alex Remba said the finals experience would boost the morale of his players.
“Many of my players are rural women,” he said.
“Coming down here and playing against heavyweights Hekari was challenging.
“But it gave us an opportunity to learn from them, and work on our weaknesses and build on our strengths.
“So the next time we come back, we will give them a better challenge,” said Remba.
Remba added that the experience helped the club measure its standards with the Mt Hagen side to push for better results next year.
