Hela counting the cost as millions lost to quake
Businesses in Hela have lost millions of kina because of the Feb 26 earthquake.
One of the affected is Tari-Pori Development Corporation, a company owned by people of the district and managed by Timon Awari.
Awari said the company had lost K7 million because of the earthquake.
“Most of our machines, buildings and properties were destroyed,” he said.
“After a quick estimate, I have realised a total of K7 million property belonging to our people’s investment company is destroyed. It will take time to rebuild them and we will slowly do so.”
The company has patched up broken walls, ceilings, lights and concrete in the recently-built Hela Treasury Building.
The company is now getting earthmoving equipment from Lae for the building of Hela Football Stadium, which has been sanctioned by Hela provincial government and Kumul Petroleum Holdings. It is also building the Hela provincial administrator’s residence in Tari.
The local council’s company is now fencing the Tari Airport.
