Hela people told to help address lawlessness in Tari
By LUKE KAMA
HELA Governor Philip Undialu says the people of Hela need to help the police and soldiers address the rising lawlessness in Tari.
“Nobody from outside will (come to) stop the lawlessness in Tari and Hela. The 300,000-plus people of Hela must take it upon themselves to address the issue head-on.”
He called on the people of Hela to provide information on the warlords and people with illegal firearms to police and soldiers on the ground.
“Our people must not harbour these warlords, murderers and people in possession of illegal firearms,” he said.
“They are a disease in society and the province. I will be advising the provincial police commander to identify all warlords and murderers. We will publish their names and identities in the media.”
He plans to set up police hotlines in the province which people can call to help police operations.
“I am appealing to the 300,000-plus people of Hela to take this issue seriously because for us to have lasting peace in the province, we have to address the issue ourselves. Not the police and defence from outside.”
