Hela puts K19 million to rebuild schools

HELA government has allocated more than K19 million to rehabilitate school infrastructures destroyed by last February’s earthquake last year because Government failed to make available funding for restoration work as promised, says Governor Philip Undialu.
He told The National that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on February 26 had its epicentre in Hela.
There was extensive damage done to education, health and other important public and private infrastructure.
“School infrastructure was destroyed with more than 80 per cent of our schools having to close down,” Undialu said.
“Hela, as a province, lost one academic year last year.
“We cannot afford to lose another academic year this year.
“That’s why Hela government has allocated K19.4 million from its infrastructure development grants (IDGs) and development levy funds towards education sector.”
