A BOY suffering from a brain tumor has a chance to undergo surgery abroad after receiving a K20,000 donation from his governor.
In a desperate plea to save 12-year-old Abraham Paul Poi, from Iombi village in Ialibu, Southern Highlands, his family wrote to Governor William Powi for financial assistance in January.
Powi said he was compelled to assist because of the seriousness of Poi’s condition so he sought funding from the Mineral Resources Development Corporation.
Poi was diagnosed with a brain tumour by doctors at the Port Moresby General Hospital last August after having a CT scan and was admitted to the children’s ward. He has been there for almost a year now.
According to his medical report by the paediatric registrar, a CT scan of the brain was done and revealed a massive right frontal horn mass possibly meningioma with obstructive hydrocephalus.
The report stated that Poi was reviewed by the hospital’s neuro-surgeon who recommended that his condition would best be treated through surgery.
However, due to the limited operating equipment at the hospital, Poi would need to go abroad for the surgery that would cost K50,000.
Poi’s uncle Jim Kire said they expected more funding to come from certain individuals and organisations they had written to for assistance.
