THE National Court has declared a local level government president in Pangia, Southern Highlands, elected after the Electoral Commission’s decision to fail the election there.

The National Court in Waigani yesterday ordered that Joseph Kunukunu (pictured) be allowed to perform his functions and duties as the president-elect of the South Wiru LLG in  Southern Highlands.

Kunukunu had taken the matter to court after the Electoral Commission declared the election of the president of the LLG null and void.

The assistant returning officer, Rex Manege Kandawale, had declared Kunukunu president-elect.

Kunukunu claimed his election was proper and that there was no foul play, hijacking of ballot boxes or intimidation.

He argued that Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen had declared it a failed election without consulting the assistant returning officer, the provincial election manager and the provincial election steering committee.

Trawen had declared more than 20 LLGs in the Highlands failed for various reasons including six in Southern Highlands.

Outside court, Kunukunu said that it was a relief for him and the people who had voted for him.

“I thank my people for voting me, for God for his intervention and the courts for being fair. I’m now prepared to work with the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and the Governor William Powi to deliver basic services to the people.”
