DEMAND for fresh vegetables and fruits in Port Moresby is high and farm workers have to work long shifts to keep up with the high demand, according to the Innovative Agro Industry (IAI PNG).
IAIPNG business development manager Gallit Tamir told The National that “demand for the 9-Mile produce is high”.
“We are managing to deliver fruits and vegetables to the market, working hard and long shifts to provide the city with essentials as part of our food security policies,” he said.
“Our activities in these times require more effort.
“Social distancing in the work place requires us to limit the number of staff in each shift.
“The safety and health of our staff are paramount, hygiene is closely monitored, and body temperature taken regularly.”
The firm also has farms and processing units around the country.
“All our farms and processing units are operating (including) Hela, Enga, Southern Highlands, Tabubil (Western) and Ilimo in Central.”
Their 9-Mile farm produces the majority of fresh vegetables in Port Moresby.
“We supply all big supermarkets – Waterfront and Boroko FoodWorld, RH (both locations), all Stop and Shop branches, 9-Mile plaza and more.
“We supply the hotels, lodges and the catering industry in the capital and in Napanapa, Lihir, Kiunga, Bulolo.
“We even supply the markets such as Gordon and Boroko.”
