High MVIL fees hurt

Letters

Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited (MVIL) is charging hefty fees for vehicle registration and the renewal of a driver’s licence.
Last week I was at an MVIL branch and the fees gave me the shock of my life. To register the following vehicles, the fees are:

  • Three-tonne truck – about K2080, and to add salt to wound there was no mercy shown to a “church truck”. A church group is a non-profit organisation.
  • A small utility double cab – about K1500 (family use and not business).
  • A driver’s licence renewal – about K140.

I am a citizen of this country and I am taxed in everything I get every day – from wages, to stores, to pharmacies, to basically everything. How does the Government expect me to survive?
I am being treated like a foreigner in my own country.
I drive an unregistered truck and pay the traffic police when I am stopped, which is cheaper than getting a registration at MVIL. I am not worried.
I don’t know about you.
