POLICE in Western Highlands are advising people to surrender any unlicenced firearms in their possession as the country prepares for the 2017 general election.

Provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Marin Lakari said the police wanted a free, fair and peaceful election process.

He urged the people to report to police anyone keeping unlicenced guns so they could be arrested.

Lakari told the people of Western Highlands to show the rest of the country that they could go through the general election in a peaceful manner.

Lakari said they did not want to see anymore the use of guns to hijack ballot boxes, threaten polling official and voters.

“We must start now to clean up our backyards before the issue of writs on April 20 next year,” he said.

Lakari said police would conduct raids to confiscate any unlicenced firearms in the communities.
