TEAMS wishing to take part in the Highlands Regional Boxing championships should make their intentions known.

They have been advised to immediately contact the PNG Sports Foundation – Highlands regional office at National Sports Institute.

Coordinator of boxing in the highlands region, Tim Gawot said the regional championship is planned for Goroka, from April 23-25.

Gawot said any of the seven highlands provinces – Hela, Southern Highlands, Enga, Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Simbu and Eastern Highlands including district or clubs interested – should contact him on 5322391 or 73 930 034 or Toksy Seteme on 7182328.

The Highlands Regional Boxing Championship has also invited provinces in Momase region to send their team as part of the preparation for PNG Games.

Gawot said this championships will assist provinces to prepare for the  PNG Games in Lae, MP and also for the National Amateur Boxing championships.

“We want to prepare well for the PNG Games. In the last PNG Games the highlands region played second fiddle to AROB and Central and this time we’d like to prepare well so that we can also be competitive during the Morobe Games” said Gawot.

Highlands Region has once produced some of the finest boxer in the past years.

And they believe that by staging the championships, HRBC will re-live those glory days and get their boxers considered for the 2015 Pacific Games.

One such boxer is the high profile Digicel Cup and former Lahanis/ Kumul rugby league captain Glen Nami who has been put through intensive training during the off season at the National Sports Institute gym by coach Toksy Seteme.

He is expected to represent Goroka at the championship.

“We are appealing to all the provinces to support their teams to come as this is the platform for selection of their provincial teams.
