A PUBLIC servant from Jiwaka has welcomed the government initiative to establish a university for the highlands region.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill had announced the plan during the University of Papua New Guinea graduation although he did not specify which highlands province the university would be located in.

Samuel Kaman, of Banz district, told The National that the national government was looking seriously into the future of students who could not or failed to enter tertiary institutions despite meeting required averages.

“Every year thousands of students passing out from national high and secondary schools in the country, only a quarter are absorbed into the system,” he said.
