ONE man is dead and another is in hospital after a hit-and-run accident along the North Coast road in Rabaul on Monday morning.
East New Britain police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali told The National the incident took place at around 1am and both men were allegedly drunk and were sleeping on the road; one was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was admitted at the Nonga General Hospital.
Tabali said the deceased was identified as Daniel Laulau, 51, from Lunga Lunga village in Gazel and the other man was identified as Richard Tula also from the same village.
“It was believed that they both were drunk and were sleeping on the road when the accident happened,” he said. Tabali said police had inspected the crime scene to gather evidence and were investigating the matter.
He called on the public along the highway and nearby villages to help identify the vehicle so the driver could be questioned. Tabali said the driver was also believed to be drunk and the vehicle was travelling at high speed.
Tabali said there were no other major reports of crime reported during the independence anniversary.
