HOHOLA Demonstration School in the Moresby Northwest became the first recipient of new-seater desks provided under the initiative of MP Sir Mekere Morauta.
The Opposition leader was present to hand over the 104 desks valued at K31,000 approved by his joint district planning and budget priorities committee last November.
Sir Mekere said more than 5,000 desks would be given to schools that had requested such assistance with the total cost of more than K1.5 million this year.
“It is my intension to get every child attending schools in my electorate to have a desk because education is the future of our country.
“My plan is also in place to build teachers’ houses, classrooms, ablution blocks costing about K8 million,” he said.
Other schools that will also be receiving desks are St Paul’s Primary, Gerehu Primary, Morata Primary, Boreboa, Carr Memorial Adventist, Sacred Heart Elementary and Primary, Kay Primary, June Valley, Eki Vaki, Waigani and St Michael’s Primary, Ted Diro, Ororo, Tokarara, St John’s Primary and Red Cross Special Educational School.
Sir Mekere said education was the most important investment and thus urged students to work hard.
“You owe it to your parents and yourselves to work hard, you have a very long way to go but step by step you’ll get there,” he said.
Head girl Ethel Doruba and head teacher Homoka Boge commended Sir Mekere for taking time off from his busy schedule to make the presentation.
