THE Papua New Guinea men’s and women’s tennis teams are doing well in the Pacific Games tennis competition held at the Steamships Racquets Club.

The women won gold in the team event on Thursday and the men’s team came fourth out of 11 countries that competed.

After the team event, the competition has proceeded to singles, doubles and mixed events that will end on Thursday.

The first and the second round for the mixed and singles events for both the men and women were played on Friday and Saturday. The quarter finals will be held today.

PNG’s highly-skilled tennis players, the Apisahs, Matthew Stubbings and Mark Gibbons are leading the points ladder for both singles and mixed events and are eyeing the quarter finals today.

Abigail Tere-Apisah and Mark Gibbons defeated Semisi Tavake Manumanu Fanguna and Sisilia Laumanu Teu of Tonga 6-3, 6-3 in the mixed event.

Tere-Apisah, who was instrumental in that win, said she was eyeing a second gold for the country.

She said she had a passion for playing tennis and that passion and drive had carried her to be where she is now.
