PNG and Indonesia have been reminded to honour the treaty they signed in 1986 about respecting each other’s sovereignty.
Military officers from the two defence forces were in Lae for a joint committee meeting on security matters.
PNG Defence Force acting deputy secretary Simon Tunapai reminded them to be mindful of the treaty of mutual respect, friendship and cooperation signed by both countries. It requires both governments and their security forces to respect each other’s sovereignty.
“Discussions must be done according to the treaty and resolutions reached in the meeting must be done in the spirit of mutual respect, friendship and cooperation,” Tunapai said.
He said they had to be mindful of the issues on border security.
Tunapai challenged the delegates to place more emphasis on channels of communication to speed up the implementation of decisions reached.
He said the Government was willing to enhance further its relationship with the government of Indonesia and such discussions would give confidence to both governments.
