NANGANANGA Village’s Hoodzco Wanderers are the champions of the Kokopo Sevens rugby union tournament after they beat Kenabot Piggies 21-7 at the Kalabond Oval on Saturday.
It was the Wanderers’ second straight title win after being crowned as champions of the Dawapia Sevens in March.
Tournament director Ronald Jack told The National that they wanted to keep youths occupied with the sport in the offseason, so they could realise their potential in the industry.
“We run this tournament in between the regular 15s season,” he said.
“Our aim is to get youths back onto the field.
“In every off-season, we always introduce the sevens tournament to keep them busy.
“By doing so, we are helping them avoid taking part in bad activities.
“We want them to reach the representative level.
“Their involvement in sports is the way forward.”
Jack said they had high expectations of each player to perform consistently.
Meanwhile, Wanderers coach Melkie Tetenge said he was happy to see his men remain committed and disciplined.
“Most of my players are rookies in the game, but it’s a great to see them perform,” he said after the tournament.
“The win is a boost for us to look forward to the 15s season.”
