TWENTY-year-old Marx Boussougou is set to make a mark following the footsteps of his father Allan in the PNG Premier Men’s Basketball League.
Boussougou is one of two recruits from Lae signed by new franchise Hornbills in the only semi-professional basketball competition in the country.
In his first appearance for the Digaso Hornbills, young Boussougou played a brilliant game helping the new kids on the block rise up despite coming off from the bench in their 70-61 win over Exodus over the weekend.
“He did pretty well tonight including Russell Stafford,” head coach Bernard Elavo said.
Elavo said the players from Lae, Stafford and Boussougou, were in the thick of things and it really helped the club to post their first win for the season.
The pair have played together previously for the Butibam Bees.
While the Stafford is a senior player, Boussougou is certain to go on to bigger things.
Stafford and Boussougou were brought in through current Southern Flames Basketball president Kevin Teme.
“Kevin knows these boys from Lae and he also did his home work to check around and recommended them to the Hornbills and in no time the Hornbills signed them on. It is good to see these boys from the outside centers coming to join Hornbills in such a competition,” coach Elavo said.
Elavo said even though they won the second game of the round, they still had a lot to improve on particularly in their fitness and skills.
Teme when contacted said he recommended the two players as well as two from Erave and Kutubu respectively in the Southern Highlands still yet to join the team. “It’s really interesting to see a new team come out victorious over Exodus and certainly the Hornbills have recruited well in the offseason before sending in their expression of interest to participate in this semi-professional basketball competition,” Teme said. Meanwhile, assistant coach Dr Benjamin Haindapa appealed to fellow Southern Highlanders including their business leaders and corporate houses to get behind the team.
