Dr Paki Molumi has been appointed as chief executive officer of the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Hospital chairman Kathy Johnston made the announcement in a statement yesterday.
Molumi from Mendi, Southern Highlands, was selected from a field of international candidates.
He holds a bachelors degree in medicine and surgery, post graduate qualifications as an ear, nose and throat surgeon and a masters of business administration.
Johnston noted that the hospital board was delighted to have Molumi, a Papua New Guinean, lead the nation’s major hospital.
“With some 20 years experience since graduation and with experience in Port Moresby General Hospital as director medical services and, more recently, as acting CEO, Dr Molumi is well prepared for this role,” she said.
“It is an exciting time for the hospital with the recent opening of a catheterisation laboratory and with other speciality services including a cancer centre and dialysis centre to follow shortly.
“The board wishes to acknowledge the support from the Government, the Sir Theophilus Constantinou Foundation, the Australian government and others without which the hospital would not be able to achieve and sustain level seven status.”
