VANIMO Hospital chief executive Elias Kapavore wants the Department of Health to improve equipment and supplies in medical stores in the area to make the free health care policy effective.

Kapavore said the policy would be implemented from today.

“To fully implement the free health care policy, we need to improve the area medical stores so it meets the requirements of the hospital,” he said.

Kapavore said the stores should have the capacity to provide the full range of supplies.

He said the policy meant that the hospital would not be charging fees.

“The free health care policy will cause more burden for the hospital as it would be quite hard to maintain these services,” Kapavore said.

He said when the medical stores did not have supplies, they used the fees collected from patients to buy  supplies from local suppliers such as City Pharmacy and Chemcare.
