The Port Moresby General Hospital plans to improve the menu available to patients with a more organic nutritious diet, says chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi.
This was after Trukai Industries Ltd donated 300kg of rice to feed inpatients.
“To complement the rice donation, we will be partnering with vegetable growers to supply fresh organic food directly from their gardens to the PMGH kitchen so our patients enjoy the food we provide,” Molumi said.
“Due to the significant cut in our budget in 2021, we welcome such support from Trukai Industries.
“We will be introducing the small approved user-fees to patients seeking services at PMGH to further sustain the supply of food and improve by adding more protein and vitamin supplements to the menu. We will give back what we collect from patient fees by way of a better menu than what we are providing now.”
Molumi said the hospital had been feeding its patients with scones, bread and watermelons.
“We know that providing a nutritious diet is as important as giving medicines, hence, this year, the management plans to introduce better food to our patients.”
Trukai Industries, in a statement, said they started donating rice last July during the Covid-19 outbreak.
It continued in November, December and January. “We also do similar donations to other non-government organisations and charities mostly in Port Moresby and Lae,” Trukai Industries public relations and communication manager Ancilla Wrakuale said.
