THE Gaubin Lutheran Hospital on Karkar Island in Madang has received K1 million of the K24 million budgeted to develop it into a level four district hospital.
Sumkar MP Chris Nangoi received the money from Health Department which had conducted a survey of the hospital last May.
The survey showed that there were things that needed to be fixed and restored it could be declared a district hospital. Nangoi also urged the church-run health service to work with the government.
“We are following the Government service delivery priorities to rural development. That is why we need to convert this hospital into a district hospital,” Nangoi said.
Gaubin hospital doctor Florian Shwoebel said the hospital built 70 years ago welcomed the funding and the planned development.
He said the hospital has been relying on funds from the church.
Nangoi said the district development authority also distributed K1.4 million to support various health programmes in the district.
