HUNTER New England Health has partnered with Rotary to donate 300 beds to two hospitals in Papua New Guinea.

The hydraulic and manual beds were replaced at the John Hunter Hospital as part of a multi-million dollar bed replacement programme.

ABC News reported that the old beds were being packed into containers and were expected to be shipped to the Alatou District Hospital and clinics in Milne Bay, in September.

Manager of financial support operations and Rotary member, Paul McCormack, said the beds would enhance patient care in PNG.

“These were part of the original commissioning of beds at the John Hunter and they have been well maintained over the 25 years since they have been there and, of course, in much better condition than the beds they would have in PNG,” he said.

“So they are going to very good homes and I’m sure they will last another 25 years in the service for the PNG people.”
