TWENTY-one kitchen staff of the Hilton Hotels and Resorts in Port Moresby have been given certificates after completing WorldChefs academy programme.
Hilton Port Moresby executive chef Neill Abrahams said the courses they started in the kitchen under the academy had seen a change in the team members’ approach.
“It is our duty to upskill our team members and equip them with the skills needed to grow hospitality and tourism,” he said.
“I am excited for the team being certified with the WorldChefs logo that is recognised in 110 countries.”
Abrahams said he wanted “to help team members who currently don’t have a certificate three in commercial cookery to have the qualification”.
“While many PNG chefs do not have a trade certificate in commercial cookery, the WorldChefs certification programme supersedes any country’s trade certificate given in conjunction with City and Guilds, one of the most recognised training providers in the world,” he said.
A statement from the hotel said the academy was created to give trainee chefs the opportunity to learn the culinary basics needed for a career in culinary arts.
The 21 Hilton team members, through the programme portal, accessed a foundation level of culinary education, providing them with the basics that set the standard for an entry-level job in a professional kitchen.
The programme was offered via a web-based platform offering an offline study mode, where they were able to able to complete the programme.
Hilton Hotel general manager John Lucas said the hotel was committed to training and upskilling its team members.
The 21 staff will undertake on-the-job training so that they can qualify as chefs.
