HUMAN resource development is crucial for Jiwaka, student leader Gideon Brown says.
Brown, a third-year law student at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), said this while receiving a cheque for K167,000 from North Waghi development authority (DDA) as school fee subsidies for students attending the university.
He said many parents struggled to pay school fees and such support from local MP Dr Fabian Pok was greatly appreciated.
Female student leader Mary Koro said many girls missed out on going to school and completing tertiary education because of school fee problems and other issues and the support given meant a lot to them.
DDA representative Wilfred Kulno, who presented the cheque, said Pok believed in education and had set it as a priority during his term in Parliament.
Kulno said the authority had paid K144,000 for the students at UPNG doing internal courses and K23,000 for the students doing external courses.
He said for the students doing internal courses, each student would get K1,144 paid to their tuition fees while external students would have K500.
A total of 172 students received the school fee subsidy.
Kulno said the authority had been supporting students with fees since 2014.
He said Jiwaka students from other tertiary institutions in the country were also benefiting from this school fee scheme.
Kulno said the authority had allocated K3 million for its school fee subsidy programme next year for North Waghi students around the country.
