Human rights lawyers needed

Letters

PAPUA New Guinea is in great need of human rights lawyers to fight the legal battles of its poor and marginalised indigenous citizens.
It is sad and worrying to see natives of PNG are either forced out, evicted or chased out of their land, home and place of dwelling by foreign and business entrepreneurs.
An influx of foreigners entering our country, in trying to establish any forms of business, has resulted in some collaborating with politicians and people of high position of trust in striking a deal without consent of native landowners.
When the deal is formalised and struck, the natives and pre-occupants of the land or settlements are usually forcefully removed or evicted without much consideration of their family welfare and children’s education.
Politicians must now stand up for the rights of the indigenous citizens and enact a new law in Parliament and say: “Developers will only carry out any form of development on an uninhabited or vacant land, and not to do anything on a piece of land already had any form of human setups.”
Human rights lawyers, please look at ATS Settlement eviction exercise that took place about a year ago.
Look into the recent much-talked about eviction at 14-mile outside Port Moresby.
A pain from eviction exercise is more inflicting and its scars leaves behind lasting memories.
