Education

MORE than 150 Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) instructors from 72 vocational schools in 16 provinces, graduated with Diploma in Vocational Education Training certificates in Port Moresby.
“Not everyone will find formal employment after graduating from colleges and universities and this is where TVET comes in very handy,” Department of Education representative Monica Maluan said.
“TVET is very important for economic and social development in Papua New Guinea because it can contribute to achieving the Prime Minister’s vision to take back PNG.”
The programme under the Human Development Programme Phase 2 project is funded by the European Union (EU) in partnership with the PNG government through DoE and the Department of National Planning and Monitoring was launched in September 2017.
The programme saw 116 instructors graduate in the first cohort last year, 2018 and this year cohort with 152 totalling to 268 TVET qualified trained TVET instructors in the country.
All the students were given scholarships under the EU funding, which the PNG Education Institute facilitated the training for six months.
EU ambassador to PNG, Jernei Videtic said: “Through this programme you are here to ensure quality in teaching standards and practices to make better products, to improve your industry, your marketing and your services.
“This is where you play a crucial role to transfer these knowledge you gain through this education to the students, young and old who wants who are looking for jobs.
“It is most important that you should not only invest in resources, if you want to grow even further you have to invest in the people as it’s the main area of investment if you want to grow the nation.”
The second cohort of TVET instructors were handed over to the Teaching Service Commission at the graduation ceremony.
The academic excellence award for the programme was given to Flora Ganita, a specialist in designing and construction.
Two citizenships awards were awarded to Betty Singemai and Theo Kami.
Tul Gora got the leadership award for his outstanding leadership skills.
