Nasfund has engaged Ase Boas, captain of the SP PNG Hunters, as a brand ambassador for the voluntary contributions product.
The rigor of planning, strong discipline and ongoing success in any champion sports person and team also reflect Nasfund’s values, said a Nasfund statement.
Nasfund is refreshing its voluntary contributions programme with an emphasis on salary packaging.
Salary packaging or salary sacrifice comes with tax benefits for both employees and employers.
Nasfund will over May 2018 be rolling out its salary packaging programme to employers, starting with awareness on tax benefits and how to administer the process through payrolls.
Nasfund’s chief of member services Charlie Gilichibi said the fund was also working on introducing alternate channels for members to make voluntary contributions through its app and online member portals.
This will be through a Visa or MasterCard debit card issued by any of the commercial banks
“Members have a choice to opt for a recurring deduction every fortnight or month, or a once-off contribution deduction,” Gilichibi said.
“This channel of contribution remittances will 100 per cent automated from the debiting member bank accounts, to crediting Nasfund contributors’ bank accounts and instant allocation of contributions into Nasfund member accounts.
“Nasfund members can expect the alternate channel to make voluntary contributions above 6 per cent to be made available in the second half of 2018.
“Nasfund over 2017 strengthened it technology enablers, people capability, systems and processes: An outcome of which is detecting and rejecting members acting under false pretence to withdraw their savings.
“As a result of that, the fund saw a sharp decline in payment transactions from 75,000 in 2016 to 61,000 in 2017. That resulted in a net organic growth and preservation of K62 million in member balances, compared to a negative K4 million in 2016.
“Nasfund advised this is an ongoing process and will be further strengthened and driven in 2018 forward.
“Members and employers colluding to authorise member applications under false pretence, should know that this is against the Superannuation Act and is also a criminal act.”
Ase Boas said: “As a sportsman, I have seen other former sports-people, after their sporting days are over, walking the streets doing nothing.
“As a brand ambassador, I encourage people to save for the future.
“As a sportsman, I cannot play for the rest of my life.
“One day, I will leave the game and at least I will have something saved for life after rugby league.”
