Hunters focus on speed

THE SP PNG Hunters went into week seven of preseason training yesterday at the Sir John Guise Stadium with more focus on high intensity and high speed running.
Coach Matthew Church described the session as the hardest so far with players doing more running in the hot and humid conditions.
Church said his intention was to focus on speed and intensity to help his side make smart decisions and executing plays at a faster speed under pressure.
“This is probably our toughest session of the seven weeks in preseason. It’s pretty hot conditions out here but I am proud of the boys who are putting in the effort,” Church said. “A lot of my effort today is about high speed running and high intensity which is what happens in games and we try to bear with that as much as possible.
“We want our game to be above game speed and we are doing this so that when we get to play at high speed we will be comfortable and make smart decisions.”
Church said there were a couple of players who were down with illness over the last two weeks but said the team was doing well overall.
“There were a couple of players who had boils and other issues but that’s common. Ase (Boas) is still down with dengue fever for two weeks now but we will do some conditioning on him once he returns to training.”
Hunters’ fullback Terry Wapi also said players were enjoying the 2020 preseason given the good rest they got between sessions which gave them the energy to train hard and push themselves.

  • That’s a good idea which our new coach has brought in because SP hunters need more speed, they have the talent and skills but they lack speed from the previous games they played, I’ve always watched their games that’s the area where they need to improve.

  • Maybe good in PNG when you play the Bears on the Gold Coast they play a slow the opponent style of a game so do a number of other teams , cant wait to watch that game , Win or loose Im proud Hunters fan – “Go Boys get up em “
