TEACHERS’ houses are being built in a pilot project by the Huon district.
The first school to benefit is Munum Primary School, 25km out of Lae.
It received a cheque of K20,000 last week to build a three-bedroom teachers’ house.
The construction of the house will start this week by a local contractor while the community will assist in providing timber.
According to a press statement, the money given to the school was part of K1 million allocated by local MP and Health Minister Sasa Zibe under his K10 million district service improvement programme (DSIP) fund to the division of education in the district.
Huon district education coordinator Moses Wanga said funds would be used to assist schools throughout the district with the bulk of the money going towards building teachers’ houses and maintenance of classrooms.
Mr Wanga said 14 other schools included in this pilot project had  yet to receive their funds from the Member’s DSIP.
He said when the funds were released, they would be used to engage contractors in building teachers houses in those schools in the Salamua and Morobe local level government areas.
