A WOMAN who was found guilty of killing her husband has been sentenced to 17 years in jail.

In the Waigani National Court yesterday, Justice George Manuhu sent Medline Yari to jail for killing her teacher husband, Petrus Hekawi, two years ago.

Yari killed Hekawi with a knife at Gerehu Primary School in Port Moresby on the morning of July 15, 2010.

Hekawi had been attending in-service training at the school when Yari went to find him following a domestic dispute the previous day.

Hekawi was due to appear at the Boroko District Court on the day of his murder to hear his charges after Yari reported the domestic dispute to police.

Yari grabbed her husband’s collar and pulled him out onto the school verandah.  A scuffle then broke out between the couple.

Hekawi was stabbed in the chest during the scuffle and was rushed to hospital but died.

Four months were deducted from Yari’s sentence so she will serve 16 years, and eight months in prison.
