IAROWARI Agro Technical Secondary School say they are looking to retain their title in the biennial Central inter-school carnival at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
Sports master Andrew Pune told The National that they had prepared for almost two years after the event’s cancellation in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We won the carnival in 2018,” he said.
“We’re now looking to retaining the title this year.”
Beginning yesterday, the four-day carnival — dubbed as the Agarobe Cup — includes soccer, touch, netball, basketball and volleyball.
The track and field events will begin tomorrow after today’s finals for all ball games.
Laloki, Mt Diamond, Kwikila, Kemabolo, Hood Point and Kupiano are also competing in the seventh edition of the carnival.
“Our preparations for the ball games were great,” Pune said.
“We had trials with other schools to finalise our contingent for the carnival.”
Pune said their netball team ended day one unbeaten.
“We won three of our games,” he said.
“In touch, our boys won and our girls lost. Our girls lost in soccer, but our boys won.
“For volleyball and basketball, our girls and boys won.
“So we’re looking to compete in the finals.”
Pune said he was confident that Iarowari would retain the Agarobe Cup.
“Our teams competing in the ball games have done well so far, so we’re expecting some good results,” he said.
“They will lay a good platform for our athletics group to round out our title defence.
“I’m sure that we will retain the title.”
