ICCC team removes counterfeit products in Kokopo

THE Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) yesterday removed “millions of kina” worth of counterfeit, expired and non-English labelled products in shops in Kokopo.
The operation, which came after complaints from the public, was led by ICCC chief executive officer and commissioner Paulus Ain who flew to Kokopo from Port Moresby.
“This exercise has unearthed several issues of concerns and we will deal with them appropriately,” he said following the operation.
“We have visited a couple of shops.
‘There were some tinned products, alcohol and some Colgate products.
“There were some footwear that were worn out and torn.
“There were also repackaged products that we removed.
“We also looked at the cleanliness of the shops and the food warmers where they sell cooked food.”
Ain said there were containers of expired, counterfeit and non-English labelled products in the premises of some of the shops they visited.
He said they removed the ones on the store shelves and warned the owners to remove the ones stored in the containers.
“It’s a very complicated exercise and needed a whole Government team to work together,” he said.
“These items are contributing to lifestyle diseases. They are cheap and readily available to the public for consumption.”
Ain warned other businesses which are selling these products to remove them from their shops.
He said businesses which are selling these products were breaking the country’s laws like Intellectual Property Rights, Food and Sanitation Act and Section 106 of the ICCC Act.
