THE International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has donated 3,000 books to Buiebi prison in Southern Highlands to help prisoners read and write.
Jail commander acting Supt Samson Kisa said the books were delivered on Friday and would be used by prisoners.
He said the books were donated through the Swiss embassy in Australia free-of-charge, including freight.
Supt Kisa said many prisoners had basic education and having reading materials would help them improve their skills in reading and writing.
He said enabling prisoners to read and write would allow them to pursue other opportunities once released.
Supt Kisa said they would be able to read and understand the laws of the country.
“We will continue to conduct classes and engage everyone serving time to learn,” he said.
